Take a look at What’s In Season this month at the Markets!
What’s In Season
FRUIT
MANGOES: KP (NT) in full swing, and R2E2 now available. Looks like an abundant season - expect quality up and prices improving as the weather warms.
EXOTIC: Aussie mangosteens are in season and delicious this week. Australian kiwifruit and dragonfruit are also in.
TROPICAL: Pineapples are eating beautifully - sweet and delectable. Watermelon is good value and tasting great.
GRAPES: Aussie season has just begun. Still early, but surprisingly good eating for this time of year.
CITRUS: Winter citrus is tailing off. Late-season mandarins only (Imperials finished). Lemons still decent value. Seville oranges have ended. Last week or two for blood oranges.
BERRIES: QLD strawberries are eating and lasting well. Blueberries are a little scarce. Blackberries available.
STONEFRUIT: Aussie stonefruit has started; not yet at full stride. Plums and nectarines are available.
APPLES & PEARS: Still eating well. Organic Pink Lady and Gala available. Pink Lady remains a great late-season pick.
BANANAS: Scarce.
VEGETABLES
TOMATOES: Large heirlooms are having a standout year for flavour.
ASPARAGUS: It’s peak Aussie asparagus season - tender, delicious, and at its best right now.
BEANS & PEAS: Round beans are a little scarce. Sugar snaps and snow peas are better value this week.
AVOCADO: Hass and Reed are available. (Reed hasn’t had a great season overall, but Hass is consistent.)
GOOD VALUE: Cauliflower, broccoli, red capsicum, leeks.
SCARCE: All potatoes and sweet potatoes. Tip: Russets are a great flavour pick - roast with the skin on for maximum taste. They’re not always the prettiest, but they’re delicious.
FLOWERS: Spring stunners in bloom: ranunculus, waratahs, waxflower, and plenty of beautiful natives.
