We take pride in being a part of your food story.

Feeding Canberra families for over 50 years

The Markets are a local institution and Canberra’s oldest market.

Offering unparalleled quality, range and convenience in one location, the Markets are open each Thursday to Sunday from 7:00 am to 5:30 pm.

A fresh food market, the majority of retail space is dedicated to the sale of fresh produce, including fruit and vegetables, meats, seafood, delicatessens and bakery products. There is also a wide variety of specialty stores, including an Asian grocery, health food shop, wine and liquor store and Niche Markets.

All locally and independently owned, the stallholders and their staff have a level of knowledge, experience and concern for their customers that provides a charming market feel.

Community

By shopping at the Markets, you support the local community, with all the shops owned and staffed by Canberrans.

The stallholders also source produce from the local region, with the fruit shops having exclusive relationships with local farmers and Plonk specialising in local wines sourced directly from local and regional winemakers.

Since their inception, the Markets as a whole, as well as individual stallholders, have made significant contributions to the local community in the form of donations and sponsorship of charities and community organisations and schools. Our main charity partners are listed below.

In addition, every Sunday, when the Markets close, many of the stalls donate any excess products to local charities, limiting wastage and environmental impacts. The Markets also have a permanent retail space where Lifeline Canberra runs a store.

Sustainability

The Markets has implemented a number of initiatives to enable shoppers to shop with sustainability and the environment in mind.

Visitors to the Markets have a variety of options available to shop without using plastic bags – all shops have reusable and paper bags available at a subsidised cost, and we reuse our cardboard boxes for customers (these can be returned to the stores for reuse). Individual stores are increasingly offering options to reduce plastic, with cardboard also recycled by individual stores.

As of 2022, the ACT Government placed a ban on all single-use plastics, with our traders no longer supplying these.

By having a number of fruit and vegetable purveyors in one place, food miles and wastage is minimised,

while transport efficiency is maximised, as trucks can carry full loads out of the Sydney Markets.

Solar panels have been installed across multiple stores at the Markets. The panels reduce the Market's carbon footprint by approximately 180 tonnes per year.

Shopping locally from locally owned businesses, not international or national conglomerates, is a more sustainable shopping choice. As an indoor-outdoor market, stores are designed not to need any heating or cooling, which contributes significantly to store electricity bills.

Each store also has its own food wastage management system, with local farmers and charities collecting food waste.
